I Couldn't Help but Wonder What SATC Looks Like in 2021
One of the boons of 2020 lockdown was binge rewatching Sex and the City. The clothes, the cocktails, the camaraderie - nothing has ever come close. Despite sometimes making terrible choices both personally and professionally, the show was magical, creating a dreamy modern world and dotted with the best of NYC dining, fashion, and nightlife.
Despite rumors for years of a SATC 3, feuds between Kim Cattrall and SJP, they finally announced that they’re launching a rebooted season. “And just like that…” hit instagram and the internet has gone wild. I’ve seen some differing opinions. Since KC has shared that she’ll never play Samantha Jones again; will the show lose its magic without one of its anchor characters? I’ve also seen the debate between, “how on earth are you going to make a show about two 50-something moms and Carrie’s “just us two,” during a global pandemic” while others feel that the show should completely ignore 2020/2021 and just “carrie” (lol) on with the original theme of them being fabulous and dining out around NYC.
Personally, I don’t feel that you can make a modern show ignoring the current events, ESPECIALLY in NYC. I’m eager to see how they handle Samantha’s character (I think recasting would be terrible), and I’d really like to know how they choose to write her off. Since in the movies, she was flying back and forth from Los Angeles regularly, I don’t think they can just have her off camera. Everyone wants to know, WHAT ABOUT SAM JONES? ARE WE IN FOR A TEAR JERKER, ie. Rosario from Will and Grace???
What about the supporting cast? If we don’t see Anthony and Stanford, I’ll be devastated. Will we get a Smith Jerrod cameo? WHAT ABOUT MAGDA?! I have questions.
The top things that I couldn’t help but wonder about:
5. Will Charlotte and Miranda still have domestic help to handle their teens? How are they handling virtual learning… poor Brady won’t be able to showcase any science projects, but with Steve’s bar likely temporarily shuttered, is he homeschooling while Miranda barricades herself in her home office? How is Charlotte coping with the difficulties of raising two tween girls and keeping them set on their learning (I’m going to assume matching macbooks in rose gold). You know that Harry’s work from home routine has him in full button down top/no pants on the bottom. (If you follow me on instagram, you know that I’m quite familiar with that considering my own husband’s wfh attire).
4. Where are they going to congregate? Will we be seeing a lot of festive winter wraps as they huddle under heat lamps for NYC outdoor dining? I’m predicting rooftop atriums, cozy cabins, and lots of fun cocktails. I’m fascinated to see how they plan to handle the fact that it’s 10 below and we’re still outdoor dining and half of the cities most notable restaurants are closed. I predict a sighting at Lou Lou in the West Village, SERRA in Flatiron, and possibly a cozy dimsum moment in Chinatown.
3. Will we be seeing Carrie leading Zoom event panels? This is a woman who can barely figure out how to backup her hard drive. Who’s going to teach her how to Zoom and Hangout and freeconference.com? Perhaps Charlotte is going to take some online art classes (or even pulls a KimK and goes to law school which Harry proudly supports) while her nanny helps the girls with their online schooling. Miranda will likely be a teleconferencing pro, she just will need to keep shoo-ing the (new) cat and dog out of her office space.
2. Will we see the media shakeups? Is Carrie still going to be freelance writing for Vogue? What books has she published since we last saw her? Has the economic changes brought on by Covid hurt Big’s business? How have the real estate crashes affected them! Carrie owns two apartments!
1. How will they handle social issues in 2021. As Jews with a Chinese daughter, are we finally going to see IRL Woke Charlotte? The first time someone says the phrase, “Wuhan Flu” or “China Virus” are we going to see Charlotte shut them the f down? We’d love to see it. Do we see Miranda inviting the ladies to a BLM protest? Homemade signs being waved, will we see Miranda, Steve, and Brady (with Magda in tow) marching for equality? Protesting Police Brutality? Shifting to representing protestors as legal counsel? Will we see the entire Goldenblatt family holding hands and marching with their five dogs in tow? Will we see Carrie and Big fighting over why it’s important for them both to attend? Big didn’t even want to attend a film premiere is he going to overcome his Boomer Energy and want to march for BLM? I’d love to know if Carrie Bradshaw is an educated advocate, or if she panders clueless, “but I’m not a racist” attitude while people try to explain to her that she’s problematic. WILL WE FINALLY SEE SOME BIPOC CHARACTERS THAT AREN’T ASSISTANTS?
Of course, I know we all want to know if we will we be seeing lockdown style?
Here’s what I envision 2020/2021 Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte would be rocking in a NYC lockdown.
Miranda
Never one to apologize for her love of basics, Ms. Hobbes will be rocking basic tees from Everlane, sweatpants, sneakers (maybe slippers), and a Yankees hat on a bad hair day while she works on her case files and sips her coffee in her home office.
Charlotte
Mrs. Goldenblatt has to keep it feminine, but practical. We’ve seen her rock a tracksuit before, but I think she’ll step it up and go for a Gucci moment. We can’t count out a lot of Ralph Lauren sets, and it’s 2021, you just know that Charlotte’s on the Lele Sadoughi headband wagon.
Carrie
Ms. Preston will always be true to her own Extra AF style. If she does succumb to lockdown casual (ie. not getting made up and dressed each day), I see her ordering every single set that Sleeper has to offer, not to mention a fine collection of feather embellished silk robes, and of course, the former Miss Bradshow would pine away for her shoes, so no bedroom slippers for her. She might be wearing pajamas, but she’ll rock them with a great set of Manolos, or personally I think she’s an Aquazzura gal.
